Blogs being spun off?

Did I miss the news on what’s happening with the Gawker blogs? On the main Gawker article about “Senior Week” someone in the comments said that Deadspin, Kotaku, and Gizmodo were being spun to one company, Gawker and Jezebel to another, and that Jalopnik was just going to die.

Does anyone know anything about this? It would certainly explain the exodus of people in the last few weeks.

Idk how much I buy into this part, as they just posted about hiring some part-time contributors last week. You’d think they’d have known what was coming at that point, and wouldn’t have bothered posting it. Then again, the parent company is Gawker. So ya never know...

I think it’s just someone bullshitting in the comments section, really. Really, the buyer(s) would determine what happens to Jalopnik.

It’ll pretty much be up to the new owner. The highest (and only) bidder right now is Ziff Davis, who intends on keeping Jalopnik and rolling it into their lifestyle blogs. Gawker assumes they will be the only bidder, hence why they’re looking to hire. If some unscrupulous character sweeps up the high bid, they can nuke or otherwise get rid of whatever they want.

That said, Gawker hasn’t been honest at all about this entire process, so anything’s possible.

Yeah, that was just a dumb joke. They are being sold as a package. The buyer could spin off or close if they want, but the auction is for the whole deal. Jalopnik is somewhat vulnerable as it is the least read of the main blogs.

Least read, but potentially still valuable on a per capita basis. I don't know (as an advertiser) that I want what Gawker mainpage people are looking at, especially if I'm a fairly mainstream company like Ziff Davis.

Fact is, I reckon we can convince Petrany, Lavrinc, and Seannyboy the Motorcycle Guy to hitch up with us and set up shop there, and use Flickr as a base blog for pictures.
